dowry
A dowry is a financial or material gift exchanged, typically as a part of an agreement to marriage, with its form and purpose varying by culture. In medieval Europe, the bride’s family often gave a dowry to the groom. In many African cultures, the groom may provide gifts to honor the bride’s family. Dowries have declined in use in many parts of the world.
