Cal. Code Regs. Tit. 22, § 70495 - Intensive Care Service Staff
(a) A physician with training in critical
care medicine shall have overall responsibility for the intensive care service.
This physician or his designated alternate shall be responsible for:
(1) Implementation of established policies
and procedures.
(2) Development of
a system for assuring physician coverage.
(3) Final decision regarding admissions to
and discharges from the unit.
(4)
Assuring there is continuing education for the medical staff and nursing
personnel.
(b) A
registered nurse with training and experience in intensive care nursing shall
be responsible for the nursing care and nursing management of the intensive
care unit when a patient is present.
(c) All licensed nurses shall have training
and experience in intensive care nursing.
(d) There shall be not less than two nursing
personnel physically present in the intensive care unit when a patient is
present. At least one of the nursing personnel shall be a registered
nurse.
(e) The nurse:patient ratio
shall be 1:2 or fewer at all times. Licensed vocational nurses may constitute
up to 50 percent of the licensed nurses.
(f) An inhalation therapist, physical
therapist and other supportive service staff shall be available depending upon
the requirements of the service.
