Cal. Code Regs. Tit. 22, § 87921 - PRN Medications
(a) The licensee shall be permitted to accept
or retain a resident who requires PRN medications (as needed medications)
including prescription or nonprescription medications under one of the
following circumstances:
(1) The resident is
able to determine his/her own need for the PRN medication.
OR
(2)
There is a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Vocational Nurse on the facility
premise and available to make the determination for the PRN medication if the
resident cannot determine his/her own need prior to each dose being taken by
the resident.
OR
(3) A
physician is contacted to make the determination for the PRN medication if the
resident cannot determine his/her own need prior to each dose being taken by
the resident.
(b) There
shall be written detailed instructions on the prescription label for all PRN
medications, including the symptoms which might require the use of the
medication, the exact dose, exact time frames between doses and the maximum
dosage to be taken in a 24-hour period.
(c) In addition to Section
87878, if a resident cannot
determine his/her own need for a PRN medication, the licensee shall be
responsible for the following:
(1) Documenting
date and time of the contacts with the physician.
(2) Maintaining a record that indicates the
name of the PRN medication and the date and time the PRN medication was taken
and the resident's response.
OR
(3)
When the determination regarding the PRN medication is made by the Registered
Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse who is on the premises, there shall be
documentation by the registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse regarding:
(A) Date and time the medication was
administered.
(B) Effects of
medication.
