The purpose of SNAP is expressed by the United States
Congress in Section 2 of the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, Public Law No.
110-246 (codified at 7 USC
2011).
SNAP is designed to promote the general welfare and to
safeguard the health and well-being of the nation's population by raising the
levels of nutrition among low-income households.
