14.5.3.2 Access-controlled egress doors.
Where permitted by the Michigan building code, doors in the means of egress may
be equipped with an approved entrance and egress access control system,
provided that all of the following criteria are met:
(1) A sensor is provided on the egress side,
arranged to detect an occupant approaching doors that are arranged to unlock in
the direction of egress upon detection of an approaching occupant or loss of
power to the sensor.
(2) Loss of
power to the part of the access control system that locks the doors will
automatically unlock the doors in the direction of egress.
(3) The doors are arranged to unlock in the
direction of egress from a manual release device located 40 inches to 48
inches. (1015 mm to 1220 mm) vertically above the floor and within 60 inches
(1525 mm) of the secured doors.
(4)
The manual release device specified in 14.5.3.2 (3) is readily accessible and
clearly identified by a sign that reads as follows: PUSH TO EXIT
(5) When operated, the manual release device
shall result in direct interruption of power to the lock independent of the
access control system electronics and the doors remain unlocked for not less
than 30 seconds.
(6) Activation of
the building fire-protective signaling system, if provided, automatically
unlocks the doors in the direction of egress, and the doors remain unlocked
until the fire-protective signaling system has been manually reset.
(7) The activation of manual fire alarm boxes
that activate the building fire-protective signaling system specified in
14.5.3.2 (6) is not required to unlock the doors.
(8) Activation of the building automatic
sprinkler or fire detection system, if provided, automatically unlocks the
doors in the direction of egress, and the doors remain unlocked until the
fire-protective signaling system is manually reset. 7.2.1.6.2] 14.5.3.3.1 Where
a door is required to be equipped with panic or fire exit hardware, the
hardware shall meet all of the following criteria:
(1) It consists of a cross bar or a push pad,
the actuating portion of which extends across not less than 1/2 of the width of
the door leaf.
(2) Existing
installations shall be mounted not less than 30 inches (760 mm), nor more than
48 inches (1220 mm), above the floor.
(3) It is constructed so that a horizontal
force not to exceed 15 lbf (66 N) actuates the cross bar or push pad and
latches. 7.2.1.7.1] 14.5.3.3.3 Required panic hardware and fire exit hardware
shall not be equipped with any locking device, set screw, or other arrangement
that prevents the release of the latch when pressure is applied to the
releasing device.

14.14.4 Power source. Where emergency
lighting facilities are required for individual occupancies, the signs, other
than approved self-luminous signs and listed photoluminescent signs in
accordance with 14.14.6.4.2, shall be illuminated by the emergency lighting
facilities. The level of illumination of the signs shall be in accordance with
14.14.6.3 for the required emergency lighting duration as specified in
14.14.6.4. However, the level of illumination shall be permitted to decline to
60 percent at the end of the emergency lighting duration. [7.10.4]
14.14.6.5.1.2 Where emergency lighting facilities are required, the required
illumination of special signs shall additionally be provided under emergency
