Mich. Admin. Code R. 400.1920 - Outdoor play area and equipment
Rule 20.
(1) A
child care home shall provide a clean, safe, and hazard free outdoor play area
on the premises or within a reasonable walking distance of the home.
(2) The play area size must be 1 of the
following:
(a) Not less than 400 square feet
for a family child care home.
(b)
Not less than 600 square feet for a group child care home.
(3) A licensee shall provide an adequate and
varied supply of outdoor play equipment, materials, and furniture that is all
of the following:
(a) Appropriate to the
developmental needs and interests of children.
(b) Appropriate to the number of
children.
(c) Safe and in good
repair.
(4) The outdoor
play area and equipment must be organized to meet all of the following
requirements:
(a) To separate active and
quiet activities.
(b) For a clear
and unobstructed view of the whole play area.
(c) To ensure that there are safe distances
between equipment.
(5)
When swings, climbers, slides, and other similar play equipment with a
designated play surface above 30 inches are used, they must:
(a) Not be placed over concrete, asphalt, or
a similar surface, such as hard-packed dirt or grass.
(b) Be safe, in good repair, and
age-appropriate.
(c) Be placed at
least 6 feet from the perimeter of other play structures or
obstacles.
(6)
Trampolines must not be used outdoors by children in care.
(7) Bounce houses are permissible outdoors
with direct supervision by a licensee or child care staff member, and pursuant
to the manufacturers recommendations.
(8) Children in care shall not be permitted
to ride all-terrain vehicles, motor bikes, go-carts, recreational, or other
motorized vehicles.
