Mich. Admin. Code R. 408.10113 - Inspection of abrasive wheels
Rule 113.
(1)
At time of unpacking, an abrasive wheel shall be inspected for
damage.
(2) Prior to mounting, a
vitrified or silicate wheel more than 4 inches in diameter shall be given a
ring test by being tapped by a nonmetallic tool such as a handle of a
screwdriver for a light wheel or a wooden mallet for a heavy wheel. The ring
test shall be conducted as follows:
(a)
Wheels must be dry and free from sawdust when applying the ring test, otherwise
the sound will be deadened.
(b) Tap
wheels about 45 degrees each side of the vertical center line and about 1 or 2
inches from the periphery as indicated by the spots in the figures
below.
(c) Then rotate the wheel 45
degrees and repeat the test.
(d) A
sound and undamaged wheel will give a clear metallic tone. If cracked, there
will be a dead sound and not a clear "ring."
