Mich. Admin. Code R. 408.7088 - Car and counterweight clearances
Rule 88.
(1) If
a car platform is level with the lowest landing, then the car buffer striker
plates shall not be in contact with the buffers.
(2) If the car is at its extreme limit of
normal travel, then there shall be not less than 6 inches between the top of
the car crosshead and the nearest obstruction.
(3) If the counterweights are resting on
their buffers, then there shall be not less than 3 inches between the top of
the car crosshead and the nearest obstruction.
(4) If the car is resting on its buffers
there shall be not less than 3 inches clearance between the top of the
counterweights and the nearest obstruction.
(5) The clearances between the car and the
hoistway enclosure, hoistway sill, or any obstruction shall be not less than
3/4 inch.
(6) The clearance between
the car platform sill and hoistway edge shall be not more than 5
inches.
(7) The underside of a
projection into the hatch shall be beveled at an angle of not less than 75
degrees with the horizontal unless protected by a safety device to stop the
ascending car.
(8) The top of the
lower landing entrance shall be provided with a safety device to stop the
ascending car if for any reason an overhanging obstruction on the car comes in
contact with a shear hazard.
