8 Va. Admin. Code § 20-671-690 - Suspected child abuse and neglect
A. Written policies and procedures related to
child abuse and neglect shall comply with the requirements of § 63.2-1509
of the Code of Virginia and distributed to all staff members. Policies and
procedures shall include:
1. Handling
accusations against staff; and
2.
Reporting immediately, but under no circumstance later than 24 hours after
having a suspicion of a reportable offense of child abuse and neglect to the
child protective services unit of the local department of social services of
the county or city wherein the abuse or neglect was believed to have occurred
or to the Department of Social Services toll-free child abuse and neglect
hotline and for cooperating with the unit during any investigation .
B. Any case of suspected child
abuse or neglect occurring at the school or on a school-sponsored event or
excursion shall be reported immediately to the student's parent and the
department . For publically placed students, the home school division and the
placing agency shall also be notified.
C. Suspected child abuse or neglect shall be
immediately documented to include the following:
1. The date and time the suspected abuse or
neglect occurred;
2. A description
of the suspected abuse or neglect;
3. Action taken as a result of the suspected
abuse or neglect;
4. The name of
the person who made the report to child protective services; and
5. The name of the person to whom the report
was made at the local child protective services unit.
